Whether you are a veteran investor or at the beginning of your investment journey, No Straight Lines Investments is your front row seat to my process of picking stocks. Along the way, we will share some laughs and highlight some key learnings from 25+ years in the investment world. You will be getting weekly (at a minimum) commentary on the markets and the stocks that I think deserve your attention. I promise to give you actionable ideas, delivered with a sizeable dollop of humility and humour.
I have always enjoyed writing about stocks and investing. For many years I have shared my opinions and ideas in write-ups sent to an email list of friends/colleagues/keen investors. I found the experience to be additive to my investing process and I decided that using a more official platform would help me connect with a broader audience. I think the emails resonated because they were opinionated, concise and easy to comprehend. The strategy will be the same with this platform.
Why No Straight Lines Investments? I chose the name because it perfectly captures my experiences in the stock market. In general, stocks don’t travel in straight lines, they tend to move all over the place, due to both company specific issues and of course, outside market forces. As long as the chosen stock ends up ultimately moving upwards and to the right, the movements beforehand are simply part of the journey.
Why me? Over the past 25 years, I have been: an investment banker (brief stint, hours were brutal), an institutional salesperson (a decade of pitching ideas to institutional buyers) and a portfolio manager (a dozen years of working on a team that managed a prop book) until ending up focusing on managing my own money for the past 4 years. In short, I have been through many sorts of markets and I think I have a somewhat informed opinion about what makes markets and stocks tick. The great part about writing is that I will be learning alongside you the reader. I don’t think there is any shame in this, it’s what I love about investing, you NEVER stop learning (and being humbled).
